Description: The ancient art of Kumihimo braiding is traditionally worked with fiber. Discover how using beads opens up a world of new possibilities. Students will create a unique necklace while learning the basics of working on a traditional Japanese marudai. High quality, wooden marudai looms from the Braiders’ Hand will be provided for use during class. Students will also learn how to incorporate a large focal bead into a beaded Kumihimo project. In addition, students will learn how to incorporate pearls, semiprecious beads, and a variety of seed bead sizes for dazzling jewelry projects. Learn numerous tips and tricks for working with beads on the marudai loom as the instructor covers set-up, weights and adjustments, thread vs. cord, working with long bead strands, and pattern variations. Comprehensive instructions will be provided, including diagrams and formulas for easy experimentation. Students will leave class wearing the new necklace and dreaming of more. No previous experience with kumihimo is necessary.
 
Project will be completed in class.
 
Student must be at least 18 years old to register for this class.
 
Supplies to Bring: Beading mat, scissors, tape measure.
 
Pliers: Chainnose, flush side-cutting and standard roundnose.
 
Materials in Kit: Sterling silver focal bead, seed beads, thread, needles, sterling silver wire and clasp. Kits will be offered in a variety of colors. Each student will have the use of a wooden marudai and accessories. Marudai looms will be available for purchase.
 
Limit: One seat per person per class.
